BERLIN: Change is coming for the Range Rover Velar, though you can't tell by looks alone: The latest model of the luxury SUV will be offered almost exclusively as a mild or plug-in hybrid.
The otherwise optically unchanged vehicle will offer new petrol and diesel engines that are all equipped with an electric starter generator as well as 48-volt technology - meaning drivers get not only reduced fuel consumption, but also better performance when setting off on a drive.
New is a four-cylinder diesel engine that can generate 204hp with 2 litres' displacement, while another in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with 3 litres' capacity and 300hp will also be on offer. For the petrol versions, the four-cylinder - the only engine that doesn't require a mild hybrid - achieves 250hp while the six-cylinder hits 400hp.
As a plug-in hybrid, the Velar marries a 300-hp four-cylinder petrol engine with a 143-hp electric motor and a 17.1-kilowatt battery. With a combined output of 404hp, this Velar P400e has an electric range of 61km at best.
Deliveries of the new model year are to begin in early 2021.
