VW Jetta exits local market

By CARSIFU | 8 August 2018

Update: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia managing director Erik Winter said on Aug 27, 2018 that the Volkswagen group is now making the seventh-generation Jetta only for left-hand drive markets, which formed the bulk of its global sales. No right-hand drive Jetta are being produced at this time, and Winter could not say when the latest Jetta will make its way to Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA: The VW Jetta will no longer be on sale in Malaysia.

Local production of the sixth-generation model has already stopped, says a VW spokeman.

Existing stocks of the Jetta have been snapped up by buyers taking advantage of festive promotions and a tax holiday, which is set to end on Aug 31. The Sales & Services tax will make a comeback from Sept 1, replacing the unpopular Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has also removed the Jetta from its official website. No reason was given for the exit of the Jetta but it is an old model that looks like it is being phased out. Unlike the PQ35-based sixth-gen Jetta, the latest seventh-generation model that was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show and based on the MQB modular platform has also been dropped from the European market.

The Jetta, introduced locally in September 2016, came in three variants, priced from RM109,000 to RM129,000 at the time.

An AllSTAR version debuted in August last year with RM3,000 worth of accessories including aluminium sport pedals, rear trunk spoiler, ‘ALLSTAR’ scuff plates, emblems and carpet mats. It was priced at RM109,990.

Like most car makers, Volkswagen sales in Malaysia were turbocharged by the tax holiday. Volkswagen saw a hefty increase of sales of 676.8% in June compared to May.

In 2017, Volkwagen sold 6,536 cars, an 8.1% growth over 2016. Over 94% of them were locally assembled.
