Mercedes-Benz accelerates AI initiative, joins IPAI

STUTTGART: Mercedes-Benz has joined the innovation platform IPAI in Heilbronn, Germany.

The German premium automaker aims to promote the responsible use of AI (artificial intelligence) in industry, accelerate innovation and strengthen Europe’s position as a technology leader.

The platform brings together experts for strategic exchange to jointly develop standards, make better use of free and open-source software and simplify regulatory processes.

“Artificial intelligence influences all areas and fundamentally changes how we think, develop, and operate at Mercedes-Benz. We aim to use AI not sporadically, but as a strategic lever for sustainable value creation. With partners like IPAI, we’re gaining external impulses and can actively contribute to a powerful network for a strong European technology landscape,” said Mercedes-Benz Group AG chief information officer Katrin Lehmann.

An internal, AI-powered web application supports all employees in their daily work and serves as a central platform for cross-departmental information and chatbots.

Mercedes-Benz is contributing its extensive experience in developing and applying AI across its entire value chain to the IPAI ecosystem.

In return, the company seeks to leverage synergies from the collaboration to enhance its own AI adoption – particularly in research and development, as well as production.

"We are delighted that Mercedes-Benz has joined. It underlines the relevance of IPAI as a driver for applied AI in Europe. In order to survive in global competition, we must pool European resources," said IPAI CEO Moritz Gräter.

Concrete outcomes could be applied, for example, in quality management for AMG engine production or at the Mercedes-Benz Digital Factory Campus in Berlin, where smart technologies are developed for use in the global production network.

The membership at IPAI also opens up opportunities to explore future scenarios such as vehicle behaviour in a connected smart city and to develop innovative solutions.

Mercedes-Benz aims to enhance the driving experience, improve safety and contribute to shaping the future of mobility through AI.

Mercedes-Benz deploys AI across its entire value chain with use cases – from development, procurement and production to sales, aftersales, IT, and even to employees’ daily office work.

The company reviews its business processes from end-to-end and systematically evaluates AI use for strategic relevance and return on investment.

Scaling occurs where real added value is created. AI-based copilots assist in procurement processes, test-case creation in development and damage detection in workshops.

Employees can intuitively use tailored AI solutions which are developed for the production network of Mercedes-Benz.

By automated workflows, effectively managed knowledge and cloud based data analysis, the efficiency and quality of manufacturing processes are improved.

AI technology at Mercedes-Benz acts as a copilot – taking over routine tasks, creating space for creativity and enhancing efficiency and quality.

This year alone, the company has doubled the daily AI usage rate among its workforce.

The goal is to reach a 50 percent usage rate by end-2025.

“At Mercedes-Benz, we seek to unlock the full potential of AI as a catalyst for transformation. We provide broad access to AI technologies for our employees and focus on scalable use cases that boost productivity and enhance the customer experience,” said Mercedes-Benz Group AG chief data and AI officer Daniel Eitler.
