New Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance makes world premiere at Shanghai F1 races


SHANGHAI: Mercedes-AMG unveiled its latest model, the GT 63 S E Performance, during the Formula 1 weekend here, marking a significant advancement in hybrid technology and performance in the luxury automotive sector.

This new top model integrates a V8 engine with an electric motor, featuring a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine combined with the AMG Electric Drive Unit to produce a total system output of 816hp and a maximum torque of 1,420Nm. This setup enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in just 2.8 seconds, making it the fastest sprinter in its series, with a top speed of 320kph.

The GT 63 S E Performance is equipped with innovative features such as the AMG Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering, enhancing both driving dynamics and comfort.

The car’s drivetrain includes a 204hp electric motor located at the rear axle, contributing to improved weight distribution and handling by directly powering the rear wheels, with the capability to also transfer force to the front as necessary.

The vehicle also introduces the AMG High Performance battery which uses direct cooling technology, allowing each of the 560 battery cells to be cooled individually by a non-flammable liquid.

This system, inspired by Formula 1 technologies, maintains optimal battery temperature for performance, safety, and longevity. The battery supports a modest electric-only range of 13km and can be charged using a standard household outlet or wall box.

Additional features highlight the car’s adaptability to various driving conditions and preferences.

These include eight AMG Dynamic Select driving programs, which adjust the car's driving characteristics across different modes such as Electric, Comfort, and Sport.

The recuperation system of the vehicle can be adjusted through four levels, enhancing energy efficiency by converting kinetic energy back into stored electrical energy.

The vehicle is also designed with practicality in mind, featuring a 2+2 seating configuration, AMG sports seats with massage functions, and advanced multimedia options through the MBUX system, which includes AMG and hybrid-specific displays.

Externally, the car distinguishes itself with a plug-in loading flap, red-highlighted model name, and exclusive 21-inch AMG five-twin-spoke forged alloy wheels.

In terms of safety and Performance, the GT 63 S E Performance comes standard with the AMG ceramic high-Performance composite brake system, ensuring reliability and durability under high Performance and heavy use conditions.

The active aerodynamics system includes a patented carbon profile that adjusts based on speed to enhance stability and reduce front axle lift.
