SHAH ALAM: National carmaker Proton closed 2025 with sales of 157,976 units, following 14,655 units sold in December.
This represents growth of 3.3% over 2024 and gave the company a market share of 19.4%, an increase of 0.7% in a year when total industry volume (TIV) contracted by 0.2% to 814,949 units.
Proton’s lineup dominated multiple segments, led by record-breaking results from its most iconic and newest models:
- Proton Saga: Reached its highest sales since 2011 with 74,013 units YTD (year to date). Notably, October saw 8,373 registrations, the highest monthly volume since the strategic partnership with Geely began, while December sales grew 15.1% (7,975 units) year-on-year.
- Proton X50: Cemented its legacy as the top B-segment SUV (sport utility vehicle) for five consecutive years. It recorded 28,057 units sold for the whole year 2025, representing an 18.6% YTD growth compared to 2024. This was bolstered by an August peak of 4,287 units (the best in 35 months).
- Proton X70: Recorded 112,386 cumulative registrations since its inception, maintaining its status as the most successful C-segment SUV in the segment’s history since 2018.
- Proton S70: Held the top spot in the C-sedan (under RM100k) segment for 15 consecutive months.
- Proton X90: Remained the top D-segment SUV segment leader for 10 months in 2025 and has held the 2025 top spot since its launch three years ago.
- Proton e.MAS 7: Secured its position as the top EV (electric vehicle) in Malaysia for 2025, holding the top spot for five consecutive months (June – October).

To support its growing customer base, Proton expanded its network to 187 Proton Edar outlets, including 27 new 3S/4S centers and sales city centres.
Parallel to this, the Proton e.MAS network has rapidly become the largest dedicated EV chain in the country.
Proton now boasts 48 e.MAS dealerships across the nation, of which 36 are 3S centres, 12 are 1S centres, and 10 are dedicated body and paint facilities.
Beyond vehicle sales, the company is actively expanding the national charging infrastructure, with 44 e.MAS dealerships currently fitted with DC fast-charging stations.
Through Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), export volumes achieved a major breakthrough, recording 6,000 registrations YTD—the highest volume since 2012 and a 26% growth over 2024.

In September 2025, Proton officially entered its third overseas market with the launch of its first EV, the e.MAS 7, in Singapore.
The event marked the historic return of the Proton brand to the republic, 11 years after its exit in 2014.
For 2025, a total of 224 units has been exported to Singapore.
- Key Markets: Egypt emerged as the largest market with 2,280 units, while a historic 1,316 units were exported to Vietnam for the Geely brand.
- Monthly High: December saw 986 units exported, the highest monthly volume in 2025.
- Top Models: The Saga, X50, and e.MAS 7 led the export charge, with the X50 achieving its highest-ever annual export volume of 1,747 units. Additionally, the Proton Saga saw 3,109 units exported globally, its highest number since 2012.
In September 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched Malaysia’s first assembly plant exclusive for electric vehicle (EV) production in Tanjong Malim.
Built on a 5.57-acre site within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), the facility commenced operations with a RM47 million first phase, providing an initial capacity of 20,000 units that is scalable to a maximum of 45,000 units per annum.
The e.MAS 7 will be the first completely knocked down model to roll off the line, followed by the e.MAS 5, while the facility is also designed to accommodate other premium Geely Group brands such as Zeekr.
In a historic operational shift, Proton officially ended 40 years of production in Shah Alam on Sept 30, 2025.
1,400 employees successfully transitioned to the high-tech Tanjong Malim facility within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV).
In 2025, Proton spent RM3.2 billion on auto parts from Malaysian suppliers.
At Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2025, Proton and MARii signed a five-year strategic collaboration to establish the National Automotive Test Centre (NATC).
Proton will designate its famed Shah Alam banked oval track as a shared testing facility for the industry, while also co-funding the development of 200 research and development talents specialising in new energy vehicles (NEVs).
Meanwhile, the Proton Xchange Programme is a RM4.8 million pilot initiative to remove unroadworthy vehicles aged 15 years and older.
In collaboration with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, the program offers RM2,000 overtrade support and a first-year road tax exemption for participants upgrading to a new Proton.
