NEW YORK: Covid-19 has turned the world upside down. For auto show organisers as well, most of whom are forced to cancel or postpone their events.

The 2021 New York International Auto Show, initially slated to start in April, has been pushed back to Aug 20-29.

The 2020 show was cancelled.

"Looking at all the issues we’re facing, we have determined that moving the dates of the 2021 NYIAS to August is not only the responsible thing to do, but it puts us in a unique position to occupy the expanded Javits Center with an additional 100,000 square feet of new exhibit space on the main floor and much more," said show president Mark Schienberg.

In the latest revision of US auto shows that are set to open in 2021, the Chicago show is set to kick things off next February followed by the Los Angeles show (May 21), the New York show (Aug 20) and Detroit show (Sept 28).

Only Detroit's shift to the fall slot is believed to be permanent. With the current Covid-19 crisis in the United States showing little sign of easing off, the Chicago slot may yet change.

A third wave of the coronavirus infections is sweeping across the United States now, threatening to be the worst yet. Over 8 million Americans are infected with over 220,000 deaths.
