SAN FRANCISCO: BMW is funding a startup that aims to bring metal 3D printing within reach of all design and manufacturing teams.

BMW i Ventures will be investing in Desktop Metal, a Burlington-based company in Massachusett that has a team of 75 experts in hardware and software, materials scientists, and designers

BMW i Ventures managing partner Uwe Higgen said Desktop Metal is shaping the way cars are being imaged, designed and manufactured. He said the startup has the potential to offer rapid prototyping and printing quality parts for end-use production, design and mass customisation.

"Just as plastic has redefined rapid prototyping, metal 3D printing will make a profound impact on the way companies manufacture rapid prototypes and mass produce parts across all major industries,” said Ric Fulop, CEO and co-founder of Desktop Metal.
