BMW's new electric flagship, the iX SUV, set for November launch

MUNICH: BMW is gearing up to launch its new top electric model, an SUV that can charge up enough energy for the next 120km of dirt road before you finish your coffee.

Set to roll off the line in November, the iX ('eye ex' and not 'nine' like the Roman numeral) off-roader is roughly the size of an X5, but it's also the first BMW to roll off its own dedicated electric platform since the i3.

BMW has announced that prices in its home market in Europe are set to start at €77,300 (RM380,000), while the more powerful iX xDrive 50 costs about an extra €20,000 (RM98,000) at €98,000 (RM481,000).

The iX xDrive 40 is set to arrive with flagship specs including 300hp and a 70-kWh battery allowing a sprint from 0 to 100kph in less than 6 seconds.

Range is said to be over 400km, and if you pay around 25 per cent more, you can get the xDrive 50 version with more than 500hp and a battery with more than 100 kWh.

This then enables a slightly faster sprint of less than 5 seconds. In the best-case scenario, you'll only need to recharge this one after more than 600km. Both models have one motor per axle.

The iX charges at up to 200kW in the top model and 150kW for the iX 40, and BMW says both models hit 80 per cent in less than 40 minutes.

Ten minutes at a charging point is enough for more than 120km for the iX 50 and more than 90km for the iX 40.

The iX also wants to set new standards in assistance and connectivity, and comes with 5G as well as new, automated driving and parking functions.

There's a new curved digital display consisting of one 12.3-inch display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen under a frameless glass surface. The next generation of the rotary control called iDrive is found on the centre tunnel.

Unfortunately, however, BMW has abandoned its plans for level-3 autonomous driving in the iX for the time being.
