BERLIN: Avid car owners have been known to take their car keys to bed with them. Now a new hotel in the German city of Dusseldorf is offering guests the chance take a car all the way up to their room.

What sounds like a joke is set to become reality in summer 2019 when the b'mine Hotel opens with 26 of its 202 rooms fitted with car-compatible balconies.

After checking-in, car and occupants are guided to a lift which whisks them to the room. The driver then parks the vehicle on the loggia right by the door.

Checking out is entirely digital, enabling a guest to use the same lift to reach the ground floor and drive off the premises without handing over a key.

The hotel says the system offers safe and weatherproof place to park the car. It also plans to fit each loggia with a recharging station to cater for all-electric cars.

The hospitality company is planning a second hotel with 40 car balconies in Frankfurt in 2020, with another eight hotels featuring car-compatible balconies planned over the next eight years.
