Cult Mini Moke returns as electric runabout

LONDON: The Mini Moke, the doorless and canvas-topped runabout which had its heyday in the late 1960s, has been revived as an electric runabout and the first cars have just rolled off the assembly line in Britain.

The rugged little Moke found fame in the dystopian 1960s TV series "The Prisoner" and petrol-powered versions have been championed by everyone from Kate Moss to Brigitte Bardot.

The battery gives the electric issue of this sunshine toy a range of 120km. That is enough for at least three round trips from a billionare's home in southern France's Cap-Ferrat to a luxury yacht in Monaco, as the makers cheekily point out.

Charging takes four hours and top speed from the 44hp motor is given as a leisurely 80kph. The new Moke is priced from £29,150 (RM162,000).

"Made in Britain, the Electric Moke is now ready to inspire and delight a new generation," said Robin Kennedy, commercial director of makers Moke International

Although it became a plaything of the rich and famous, the Moke was based on the low-priced and ordinary classic Mini. The open-topper was originally developed for a military contract, which later failed to materialise.

Five exterior paint colours (Granite Grey, Sunlight Yellow, Sunset Orange, Scuba Blue and Wave Blue) can be chosen at launch, with more options planned to be added later this year.
