UTRECHT: Netherlands-based online store Bol.com is offering customers a quirky, do-it-yourself electric car which can be assembled from 223 mainly household articles sold on the company's internet sales platform.

The "Winkelwagen" - the name is Dutch for shopping trolley - is more of a fun car for two adults than a genuine electric vehicle, but the company says it is fully operational and has a range of 35km

Bol.com said the electric runabout marks the 18th anniversary of the company which is the biggest online retailer in the Netherlands.

The Bol range covers 15 million different items, none of which have anything to do with cars. The list of parts for the Winkelwagen includes many everyday items which go together to make up the blue and white vehicle.

The chassis consists of a children's bed and the bonnet is actually a wheelbarrow tray. The pedals are made from steel kitchen spatulas and the front grille is a stainless steel cooking grid.

Passengers sit on office chairs, using dog leads as safety belts. Among the other items used are disco lighting, dumbbells, gym mats, a rubbish bin and even a toilet brush.

Power for the Winkelwagen comes from a motor of the type used to power electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters for senior citizens.

The Winkelwagen weighs 322kg, measures 2.72 metres from front to rear and is 1.47 metres wide. Performance figures for the car have not been released.
