STUTTGART: If you're someone who often needs a little more space than an SUV can offer, you might have considered resorting to a people carrier like the Mercedes V-Class MPV.
After generations of diesel and petrol powertrains since the 90s, the V-Class is now turning onto electric avenue, with an EQV set for release in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Powering the MPV will be a 204-horsepower engine sipping electrons from a 100-kWh battery that can keep the van driving over a range of up to 418lm, Mercedes says.
The EQV sprints from 0 to 100kph in about 10 seconds and reaches a maximum of 140kph. Pay extra, and Mercedes will let you drive the V-Class at speeds of up to 160kph.
Mercedes says that despite the addition of a large battery in the floor of the car, the full flexibility of the V-Class is retained: The loading space of the V-Class, which is offered in two lengths, remains unchanged, and the seats can still be moved and turned flexibly.
A further innovation is the MBUX operating system with a large touch screen and new EQ software that helps you plan routes and search for charging stations. If you're recharging with 110kW, you can go from 10 to 80 per cent in 45 minutes.
