PETALING JAYA: Traffic volume on the North-South Expressway saw a significant drop during this year’s Chinese New Year holidays compared to last year’s pre-Covid-19 times, says PLUS Malaysia Berhad.A

“PLUS records a daily average of 760,000 vehicles as compared to the two million on peak days during last year’s Chinese New Year holidays.

“The low volume of traffic at all our highway network, when compared with the normal Chinese New Year festive period, arises from the banning of interstate and inter-district travel during the movement control order, ” said PLUS Malaysia Berhad chief operating officer Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi.

“As at 3pm yesterday, the traffic was smooth and manageable at all toll plazas’ entry and exit, ” he told The Star.

Zakaria added that the authorities were maintaining a close eye on road users, especially at toll plaza exits, with 79 roadblocks including at Jalan Duta, Sungai Buloh and Damansara.

“We urge the public who are required to travel on urgent matters to plan their journey properly and ensure that their Touch ‘n Go cards and e-Wallets are sufficiently reloaded to minimise disruptions and the need for physical interactions at toll plazas.

“Road users must also wear face masks when dealing with our personnel at the toll plazas, ” he said.

With interstate and inter-district travels still being banned, traffic was heavy in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

A check saw high traffic volumes along the Federal Highway, Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong and the Middle Ring Road 2. However, no congestion was reported.
