BERLIN: The far-from-new idea that cars should be able to warn each other of danger is being reimagined with the capabilities of 5G in a new feasibility study unveiled at the Mobile World Congress.

Vodafone, Porsche and the Here mapping service are leading the study that intends to look especially at how such a system could be effective in situations where drivers have trouble seeing ahead.

The starting point for the process is a combination of cameras and other vehicle sensors: Software based on artificial intelligence is supposed to recognize when the information indicates a dangerous situation.

Maps and positioning technology are to be used to determine the location in question extremely accurately, and the data will be processed in computer units set up at the roadside.

The warnings generated from this data will then be transmitted to vehicles via 5G radio.

Technology that allows cars to warn each other of accidents has been in the works for several years, with both direct radio links between vehicles and the use of cellular networks being tried out.

So far, the technology has not caught on widely.
