German firm turns Tesla into a hearse for zero-emission last ride

BERLIN: A German company has turned a Tesla Model S pure electric limousine into a hearse - for a sustainable, eco-friendly last ride.

To create the silent hearse, Germany-based coachbuilder Binz, from the town of Lorch, had to virtually chop the car in half. It was then stretched by 84cm behind the front doors.

Tesla approved the conversion, and the adapted car will be sold as a Binz.E, said company head Thomas Amm. Work on the project took six months to complete.

The rear-end treatment now includes a platform for a coffin measuring 2 metres long which can be raised or lowered electrically.

Ambient lighting ensures the right atmosphere in the tall-roofed, glass rear section which can accommodate all sizes of caskets, including those topped with floral wreaths.

Motive power comes from the standard Tesla electric motor, which means the Tesla hearse with 613hp on tap is theoretically capable of 250kph instead of the walking pace customary during funerals.

Binz said the hearse can be ordered for around 200,000 euros (RM1mil) or twice the price of a standard Tesla limo.

Production for the rest of 2017 is sold out, says Amm, who adds that work on a possible estate car version for other customers has been put on hold. "We will turn our thoughts to that when we have served our regular funeral company customers," says the Binz chief.

The Netherlands-based funeral transport company Vander der Lans & Busscher BV was the first to make a funereal Model S, which was unveiled in 2016.
