Glass dome and soft top: Porsche 911 to return as a Targa

BERLIN: Barely a year old, the youngest generation of the 911 family is still growing and the 911 Targa is already getting warmed up for a mid-2020 launch.

After debuting a conventional convertible, Porsche has announced it will also be offering the 911 as a Targa semi-convertible in Europe from August.

The German fast car maker is promising a soft top over the front two seats and a glass dome over the second row of seats, both separated by a black rollover protection bar.

Anyone looking for a bit of fresh air while at the wheel will need a bit of patience, however, and this sports car needs a full 19 seconds to fold the roof's fabric part under the glass hood.

Compare that to the 9 seconds in the Porsche 718 Boxster or just 7 seconds in the Ford Mustang convertible needed from button push to open top driving.

In the time it takes to fold down the roof, the car can easily manage two full sprints to 100kph, thanks to an output of 385hp in the basic version — 450hp in the Targa 4S.

Porsche says the Targa comes with a three-litre six-cylinder engine and four-wheel drive, but buyers can also opt for an eight-speed double clutch or, for the same price, a manual gearbox with seven gears.

The 2+2-seater accelerates from 0 to 100kph in just 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 304kph. The standard consumption is 9.8 litres for the Targa 4 and 9.9 litres for the Targa 4S. This corresponds to 223 and 227 g/km CO2.

The Targa 4 is set to launch in Europe for prices starting at €128,486 (RM612,000), while the Targa 4S costs €143,956 (RM686,000).
