Go easy on new tyres for first 150km

BERLIN: Fresh tyres require a gentle running-in period before a motorist tackles everyday traffic, experts at Germany's Tuv type approval agency advise.

This is because manufacturers usually apply a lubricant or silicone based spray to the tyres to prevent them from sticking to the moulds when they are made.

The layer is invisible and takes around 150km to wear off. Until it wears off, the agent can act as a barrier between the tyre and the road, thereby reducing grip.

During the run-in period, drivers should travel at moderate speed and avoid sharp cornering and harsh braking.

It's a good idea to leave a longer distance than usual to the vehicle in front, since grip and braking properties may not yet be up to the normal standard.
