Haphazard parking, so DBKL resumes clamping in 'critical' areas tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Clamping of haphazardly parked vehicles here will resume in critical areas beginning tomorrow, declares Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) just a few days after it announced that it would temporarily put a halt to it.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said there was a need for strict enforcement in certain areas in the city centre to ensure a smooth traffic flow, as people were flouting traffic rules.

He did not specify where these critical areas were since a final list has yet to be compiled.

“DBKL enforcement officers will decide on the critical areas, and clamping in those area will resume tomorrow,” said Mohd Amin.

On May 28, the mayor had announced its decision to suspend clamping of vehicles in response to a request from several Kuala Lumpur MPs for DBKL to review the parking contract awarded to Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP), the welfare arm of the Federal Territories Ministry.

The MPs asked for the contract to be suspended on the grounds that the local authority did not call for an open tender.

YWP outsourced its parking contract to Vista Summerose Sdn Bhd at the end of 2016.

On the first day that wheel-clamping was suspended, StarMetro reported that illegal parking had become rampant in Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Sri Petaling and Taman Danau Desa between the hours of 10am and 1.30pm.

The mayor was also quoted as saying that city hall anticipated similar problems in hot spots like Solaris Mont Kiara, Bukit Damansara, Sri Petaling, Kepong and Taman Tun Dr Ismail among other commercial areas.
