KALABAKAN: Every year, the Borneo Safari International Off Road Challenge, involving four-wheel drive vehicles, used to be the most anticipated event among extreme sports enthusiasts.

However, the enforcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic has meant the October event had to be put off.

The Borneo Safari organiser has adapted to the situation by organising a charity mission to help people affected by the disease.

Part of the event activities included sending food aid to villagers across in Sabah.

Club advisor Nasir Bacho, when met recently, said they assisted the Kalabakan District Office and Social Welfare Department to distribute 800 food baskets to residents affected by Covid-19.

“We sent food baskets to villages in Kalabakan, including to Kampung Serudong, where the road is uneven, and it is located in the forest area, making it difficult for light vehicles to pass through.

“The Kalabakan 4x4 Club is ready to assist if needed, and we do this voluntarily,” he said.

Nasir said that besides assisting the needy, the charity mission also provided double happiness to club members who get to satisfy their hunger for extreme activities.

With 10 years of experience participating in the Borneo Safari, he hopes to create the same challenge in Kalabakan in a bid to promote the district, thus improving the economy of the local community.

“When Covid-19 ends, we plan to organise an event in Kalabakan because it has an offroad track that we can use. We did this once in Pasir Putih, Tawau and it was a success and was participated by extreme vehicle activity enthusiasts from Brunei, Indonesia, Labuan and Sarawak,” he said.

The Kalabakan 4x4 Club was set up in 2018 and has 60 members, to date, with 35 modified vehicles.
