Kia USA ditches Optima name for K5

By CARSIFU | 1 July 2020

LOS ANGELES: The Kia Optima is getting a model name change in the United States, with the latest generation now called K5, which makes it fall in line with what the model is called in the rest of the world.

The new all-turbocharged engine lineup delivers improved efficiency and higher horsepower. And it will have a version that's all-wheel drive for the first time.

The upcoming K5 is based on the modular N3 platform, which Kia said is stronger while being longer, wider and lower.

Going on sale this summer, the K5 will be available in four trim levels (LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX), with the sportiest GT to follow later in the fall.

The K5 incorporates Stinger design DNA while expanding Kia’s future design language.

Touted as a sports sedan, Kia designed the K5 not only to look the part but to perform like one.

Its aggressive profile and deeper centre of gravity sets it up for a more exciting driving experience. In addition, suspension geometry was optimised for sporty handling, responsiveness and stability.

At the same time, improved sound deadening materials result in a quieter and more premium cabin. All K5 trims are fitted with acoustic laminated windshields to help maintain a quiet cabin.

The newly designed infotainment display creates a futuristic, three-dimensional layout and driver-centric space that complements the open layout of the cabin. New wireless features minimise cord clutter and keep the cockpit clean.

It is equipped with either 8- or 10.25-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen.

Other interior highlights include: aircraft-type shift knob; a mix of premium and sporty upholstery options; panoramic sunroof and flat-bottom, sport steering wheel (GT-Line and GT).

Lower-end variants are powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine producing 180hp and 265Nm of torque paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission The range-topping GT gets a 2.5-litre turbocharged GDI + MPI four-cylinder engine making 290hp and 423Nm of torque.

The GT is mated with a wet dual-clutch automatic, and grippy Pirelli P Zero tyres, enabling it to dash from 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds.

The K5’s all-wheel drive system - to be fitted to the 1.6-litre GT-Line variant - is front-wheel drive based, which is a first for a Kia sedan. It uses an electro-hydraulic system to control AWD coupling for a quicker response and more precise control.

Normal, Smart, Sport, and Custom drive modes adjust settings for engine, transmission, AWD (when equipped) and steering mapping to provide the desired driving experience. The GT steps it up with Sport+ mode to enhance driving characteristics

The K5 is assembled in West Point, Georgia alongside the Telluride SUV.
