KL City Grand Prix to feature V8 supercars

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorsport enthusiasts will have an opportunity to witness the top five V8 Supercars series racing teams in the streets of Kuala Lumpur come this August.

GT Global Race (M) Sdn Bhd chairman Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja'afar said the exhibition race was part of the collaboration for the inaugural KL City Grand Prix to be held from Aug 7 to 9.

"V8 will bring five demo cars with five drivers. We have entered into an agreement for the V8 Supercars to race at our track for four years from 2016," he said at the KL City GP pre-launch on Wednesday.

KL City GP, a festival of super sports cars racing, will be held on a 3.2km circuit designed within the main streets around the Kuala Lumpur and is organised by GT Global Race in alliance with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Sepang International Circuit (SIC).



The city race track starts from KLCC and passes through Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Pinang and back to the KLCC.

Tengku Naquiyuddin said besides the GT car racing, KL City GP would have four other races namely the Lamborghini Super Trofeo, Formula Masters, Porsche Carrera Cup and Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Meanwhile, SIC's chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali said SIC have the expertise in turning city streets into a circuit with safety precaution taken.

"We (SIC) have the experience regarding the circuit. Street circuit and Sepang Circuit used the same principle to build, safety is our priority. We will build a temporary track for this event," he said.

Commenting on the involvement of V8 Supercars, Razlan said SIC had been hoping to bring the supercars to race at Sepang Circuit but acknowledged that the race would be more exciting to watch in the streets.
