PETALING JAYA: MOTORISTS involved in minor accidents along the North South Expressway will no longer need go to the nearest police station to lodge a report.

Perak Police Chief Comm Hasnan Hassan said the police’s new Highway Investigation Unit will assist with the handling of any minor accidents on the highway to save people the hassle and time of going to the nearest police station.

“The unit specialises in investigating small accidents along the expressway.

“Those involved in minor accidents can either sort out the matter at the scene or at the unit’s offices located at major rest stops along the expressway,” he said, adding that there are 14 areas on the expressway where accidents happen frequently and 51 other areas where accidents are likely to occur.

Comm Hasnan said this during the launch of the “Ops Selamat 13 – Rumah Selamat, Selamat Sampai ke Destinasi” campaign near the Jelapang toll plaza last week. He said there the number of accidents and deaths had dropped since the campaign started on June 9.

“Compared to last year in the same period, the number of accidents dropped by 19 cases, fatal accidents by two cases and deaths by one case.

“Based on these statistics, I believe the operation, which is being held until June 22, will continue to have a positive impact on road safety,” he said.

Comm Hasnan said he hopes that road users will be cautious and adhere to traffic rules while on roads or highways.

“Most accidents are usually caused by carelessness. In order to reduce the number of accidents and deaths, motorists need to change their attitude,” he said.

“Through education and the support of effective enforcement, I trust we will be able to do it,” he added

Comm Hasnan said 70 senior officers and 506 policemen are taking part in Ops Selamat 13.

The Police Air Wing Unit Training Base (PLPGU) in Ipoh has been designated the control centre for Ops Selamat 13, receiving and providing reports on the latest traffic condition along the expressway.
