MUNICH: BMW is launching a new, sleeker X4 SUV to go alongside the X3. With prices starting at US$58,000 (RM236,000), the X4 will be about US$6,000 (around RM25,000) more expensive than its smaller cousin.

The second-generation X4, which will seat five, has grown significantly since its first generation. Length has been extended by 8cm to 4.75m in total and width by 4cm to 1.92m. Its wheelbase has also expanded to 2.86m, an increase of 6cm. Only the X4’s height will decrease by a few millimetres.

According to BMW, rear passengers in particular will benefit from the new dimensions, with 4cm extra legroom, as well as between 525 and 1,430 litres of cargo space in the boot, which features an electric tailgate.

While plenty of new digital instruments will be introduced for the car’s interior and more assistance systems will be available than ever before, there is also a choice of seven engines.

The X4 will be available in four diesel engines, ranging from the 2.0-litre four-cylinder 20d with 190hp to the M40d model, which will have a 3.0-litre V6 with 326hp.

The three petrol engines range from the 2.0-litre X4 20i with 184hp to the M40i, which will have a 3.0-litre V6 with 354hp. Depending on engine choice, the X4 can reach top speeds of between 213 and 250kph.

Average fuel consumption will be 5.4 litres per 100km for the diesel engines and 7.1 litres for the petrol variants.
