MALACCA: Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) hopes to rake in RM5 million within three years from the bidding of its exclusive vehicle number plates starting today.

UTeM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Raha Abdul Rahim said on Tuesday that the five categories of the exclusive number plates, namely bronze, silver, gold, diamond and platinum, would be open for bidding starting from RM450 to RM30,000.

She said the first phase would involve the bronze and silver categories, starting Dec 9 until Dec 14.

She said the Road Transport Department had approved the registration numbers 1 to 9999 and that the UTeM acronym would be in capital letters

"A rebate of RM100 will be given to UTeM staff, students, alumni and retirees who are successful in the bidding and the rebate is only valid for one number per person," she told reporters after the launching ceremony here today.

Raha said the bidding would be conducted through the ebida.utem.edu.my system developed by the university.

She said that besides generating income and easing its financial burden, the sale of the exclusive vehicle number plates was also aimed at specifically raising funds for the university’s research and development grants as well as promoting the university to people from all walks of life.
