Mayor denies KL will impose congestion charge

KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall has denied news report that it will be implementing a congestion tax in the city centre after the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1 begins operation.

"No such policy, decision or suggestion from any parties whether from the Federal Territories Ministry, Transport Ministry or DBKL," KL mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said to Kosmo! via WhatsApp Thursday.

He was asked to comment over a news report that DBKL was in the midst of finalising details on a congestion tax system in the capital city.

Singapore, London, Milan, San Diego and Stockholm have implemented a congestion charge, which is a daily levy drivers have to pay to enter certain zones in the city. As the name suggests, the charge is aimed at deterring jams in the city and improve air quality.
