McLaren to build 3-seat Hyper-GT

LONDON: McLaren has confirmed details of a 3-seat sports car which it said would be the most luxurious road-going McLaren to date.

Only 106 units of the so-called "Hyper-GT" will be made and all have been pre-sold. The car will be made by the company's bespoke arm, McLaren Special Operations, and start deliveries in early 2019.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said the car codenamed BP23 (3-seat Bespoke Project 2) would copy the three seat layout with the central driving position made famous by the McLaren F1, and it would be housed in a streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon fibre body.

"We are calling BP23 a ‘Hyper-GT’ because it’s a car designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren."

It would have a hybrid powertrain, making it one of the most powerful McLarens created but the car is expected to also deliver the highest levels of refinement, enabling significant journeys to be undertaken with up to three people aboard.

Production is limited to 106 units, which is the same as the number of F1s produced. Future owners will work alongside MSO to create their own bespoke cars, being able to select colour, trim and other points of personalisation unique to them.

All of the switchgear would be bespoke. Like the F1 and all of McLaren's road and track cars, the car would feature dihedral doors, but for BP23, the doors would be powered for the first time with apertures extending into the roof.

Further details of the car’s specifications would be available nearer the launch date.
