LONDON: Designed to streak around racetracks but also whisk millionaires to the opera, McLaren's latest high speed creation is the fastest car to ever emerge from the bespoke British maker.

Most drivers will only ever see the rear lights of the Speedtail which is McLaren’s first ever Hyper-GT and its most aerodynamically efficient car ever.

The 1,050-horsepower V8 hybrid power-train catapults the elongated creation to 403kph with jaw-dropping acceleration on the way. From a standing start the 300kph mark comes up after just 12.8 seconds.

The Speedtail is limited to 106 examples, all of which are spoken for.

Not all the technical details of this private jet for the road have been revealed but with a price tag of around 2.1 million euros (RM10mil), owners can expect plenty of superlatives.

The wing mirrors have been replaced by cameras, the screen darkens at the touch of button to counteract dazzling sunlight and a mass of carbon fibre fittings keeps down the weight.

The company sees the car as a worthy successor to the legendary F1 from 1993 and the Speedtail boasts the same three-abreast front seat configuration with the driver in the middle.

McLaren, based in the English town of Woking near London, said the Speedtail will be ready to roll in late 2019 or early 2020.
