MUNICH: The former roadster brand of MG is launching its first ever car designed as a through-and-through electric.

Until now, the old British brand, which has since emigrated to China, has only been selling combustion engines converted to run as electric cars.

But now the Marvel R, specially developed only for electric mobility, is due to roll up to the charging station as a 4.67-metre SUV, putting it in the same league as the VW ID4 or Skoda Enyaq.

This also goes for the ambience and equipment, with luxury materials, an almost 20-inch touchscreen in the cockpit, 15 assistance systems and comfort features such as the panoramic roof or the electric tailgate as standard.

With a wheelbase of 2.80 metres, the futuristic and sleekly designed Marvel R offers space for five people. According to MG, the boot holds 357 to 1,396 litres. In addition, some variants have a 150-litre "frunk" for extra storage.

The basic version is powered by two electric motors with a combined 180hp on the rear axle. For a higher price, MG will install a third motor in the front. This turns the Marvel R into an all-wheel drive vehicle and raises its output to 288hp.

The entry-level model can sprint from 0 to 100kph in 7.9 seconds. But pay for that extra motor up front and the spec sheet then lists only 4.9 seconds.

The top speed for both variants is 200kph, according to MG - significantly higher than most European competitors in this segment.

Energy is supplied by a battery with a capacity of 70 kWh. Depending on the configuration, this lasts for 370 to 402km and it can also deliver its power to external devices such as a pedelec.

After that, the Marvel R has to be plugged in and charges with a maximum of 92kW. If you can charge that fast, you'll need about three quarters of an hour to get from 0 to 80 per cent.

Prices in Europe start at €42,990 (RM207,000), according to the manufacturer. For just under €8,000 (RM39,000) more, MG will install a third motor in the front.
