New Mazda3 debuts all-wheel drive

LOS ANGELES: The Japanese automaker has hosted the world premiere of its all-new Mazda3, on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

In terms of design, this fourth-generation Mazda3 is largely inspired by the Kai concept presented in 2017 in Tokyo.

The Mazda3 will have the usual hatchback or saloon options for motorists, albeit in a much more futuristic packaging.

Gone are any lines in the car's smoothed-out exterior which, when the light angles change, make it appear to be shapeshifting as it moves.

Inside, the interior is radically minimalised with significantly fewer switches and buttons. In their place is a large touchscreen over the centre console and a turn controller on the centre tunnel.

Under the bonnet, the changes keep on coming with the 3's Skyactiv-X engine, the first petrol engine to use the compression ignition of a diesel engine.

This innovation provides up to 30 per cent more torque than a conventional petrol engine while still reducing fuel consumption by 20-30 per cent, thanks to an additionally installed mild hybrid system, says Mazda's engineers.

In addition, there will also be a conventional 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 1.8-litre diesel option, with both engines, as well as the Skyactiv-X, available in all-wheel drive.

In terms of assistance systems, the Mazda3's electronics can now not only assist in accelerating and braking on the highway, but also in steering.

Having sold over 6 million units since its 2003 debut, the new Mazda3 is a global strategic model that has driven Mazda's growth from both a brand and business perspective. It has delivered Mazda's renowned driving pleasure to customers all over the world and been a mainstay of production at key plants globally.

The Mazda3 rolls out worldwide in 2019.

Los Angeles Auto Show is open to the public Nov 30 to Dec 9.
