New Toyota RAV4 heads for NY debut

TOKYO: The all-new, fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 will make its world debut on March 28 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

The Japanese car maker today released a teaser image of the RAV4, showing a silhouette of the compact crossover. It did not reveal further details on the vehicle, preferring to save it all for the big day.

The RAV4 is a bankable model for Toyota, and the upcoming model is likely to use the new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) modular platform that is shared with the C-HR, Camry and Prius.

To heighten the appeal, the new RAV4 would likely feature a more aggressive styling just as what Toyota did with the Camry to move the brand away from being perceived as reliable but with ho-hum looks. The new RAV4 takes some design cues from the FT-AC concept, which was introduced at the 2017 LA Auto Show.

Whether the new RAV4 will opt for turbocharging or remain naturally aspirated remains to be seen but one thing’s for sure. Improved fuel efficiency will be on the cards and a hybrid will form part of the model line-up.

The outgoing RAV4 uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 176hp.

The RAV4 could also be sold with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Expect the new RAV4 to be priced from around US$25,000 (RM98,000) in the United States.
