KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded new vehicle sales of 56,213 units in April 2022, down 3.63% from 58,329 units a year ago due to a shortage of chips and components.

In its monthly update, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said the total industry volume (TIV) for April 2022 was 23% lower than March 2022, which was at 73,222 units.

The association said the shortage of chips and components, as well as shipment delays, affected some companies.

"Much of the sales had been fulfilled by companies having their financial year ended on March 31, 2022," it added.

MAA said of the total sales, passenger vehicles (PV) accounted for 49,815 units while commercial vehicles (CV) comprised 6,398 units.

Year-to-date sales stood at 215,965 units, up 7.96% from the 200,043 units recorded in the same corresponding period last year.

In terms of total production, 54,734 vehicles were produced in April compared with 51,390 units a year ago.

The MAA sales volume for May 2022 is expected to be at similar levels seen in April as a result of the short working month due to festive holidays and shortage of chips and components plus shipment delays.
