PETALING JAYA: In a bid to enhance driver safety, Grab Malaysia is implementing facial recognition technology in its app.
The facial recognition technology, which is now an essential component of the e-hailing operator's Passenger Verification feature, was unveiled at its office here on Thursday (April 11), in collaboration with the Transport Ministry.
With the incorporation of the technology, first-time users are required to take a selfie of themselves using the Grab app before booking their first ride.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who was present at the launch, praised Grab Malaysia for its initiative in ensuring the safety of its drivers.
"It is important that the public and private sectors work hand-in-hand to harness new technologies for social good," he said.
Grab Malaysia country head Sean Goh said with the facial recognition feature, driver safety would be assured, while passengers privacy would still be protected.
"Their selfie will only be used for one-time verification purposes, and it will not be shown to drivers," said Goh, adding that their personal data was protected under Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act.
