PETALING JAYA: Traffic in the Klang Valley has picked up recently despite the movement control order (MCO) still in effect.

In Selangor, police have noticed an increase in traffic volume since the third phase of the MCO.

Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Azman Shariat said there were more cars on the road at various roadblocks.

“The traffic becomes congested because of the stringent checks. If the queue is too long, we will open two lanes to carry out inspections.

“But this can only be done on certain roads as some stretches are too narrow to accommodate additional lanes, ” he said.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Zulkefly Yahya said there was a slight increase in traffic in the city.

“This is probably due to more establishments allowed to operate in phase three of the MCO.

“Traffic is usually heavy between 6.30am and 8.30am with people going to work.

“When congestion occurs, we will open up two lanes at roadblocks to smoothen things, ” he said.

The police urged the public to remain indoors and comply with the MCO. Those who need to go out to buy essential items should plan their journey and visit the nearest outlets.

Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said the time for warning errant motorists to abide by the MCO is over and they would be arrested on sight.

He said after two phases of the MCO, the public should already know what they could or could not do during this period.

“We will no longer warn and give advice. Now we will arrest those who defy the MCO."
