Powerful new BMW-McLaren engine in the works

MUNICH: BMW is teaming up with British supercar maker McLaren to develop a series of new, high-performance engines.

McLaren said the aim was to improve combustion technology and deliver more output per capacity than currently possible.

The engines from the partnership are also designed to be greener, since the fuel is burnt with more efficiency and fewer CO2 emissions.

The new power units will slot into McLaren supercars rather than everyday BMWs. The collaboration stands to prove that conventional combustion engines have a lot of life in them yet, despite advances on the electric and electric-hybrid front.

This is not the first time the Bavarians have teamed up with the British firm.

BMW's Motorsport division had a hand in a McLaren V12 engine, considered to be one of the finest of its kind. The six-litre unit turned out 617 horsepower and was used in McLaren's flagship sports car.

McLaren leads the new project, which is partly funded by the British government. Other high-profile partners include engine manufacturing partner Ricardo along with Grainger and Worrall, the lightweight casting experts.
