SHAH ALAM: A recall was issued for the Toyota Prius and Lexus CT200h sold a few years ago in Malaysia, due to faulty airbags and charcoal canisters in the fuel tank.
More than 3,500 units of the Prius (produced between April 2009 and April 2012) and about 1,700 units of the CT200h (produced between December 2010 and April 2012) are affected by faulty curtain shield airbag inflators.
There is a risk of injury to car occupants as the inflator could be ejected into the cabin if the airbag is deployed.
During remedial work, which will take 2 to 4 hours, the affected cars will be fitted with retention brackets on the curtain shield airbag inflators.
These retention brackets serve as protectors to prevent the inflator chambers from being ejected into the cabin.
Also, around 6,000 units of the Prius (produced between April 2009 and November 2013) and 3,000 units of the CT200h (produced between December 2010 and December 2013) are affected by possibly faulty evaporative fuel emissions control unit or charcoal canister in the fuel tank.
It is possible that cracks could develop in the canister coating, and eventually, fuel may leak from these cracks when the car has a full tank of fuel.
During remedial work, which will take 2 to 3 hours, the fuel suction plate sub-assembly will be replaced.
Remedial work on the affected cars are free, as UMW Toyota Motor will bear all costs.
Owners who do not receive any recall notices can call toll free 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682) or 1800-8-LEXUS (53987).
