FRANKFURT: Once upon a time, MG was the traditional British manufacturer behind many a roadster legend. Now, it's a Chinese-owned brand, and one that wants to shock this marque back into life with an affordable but high-tech electric range.

Nigh on 20 years after the bankruptcy of "Morris Garages," the MG initials are back, and after the announcement of the electric SUV ZS and the plug-in hybrid EHS, the once-hallowed brand is preparing two more electric arrivals for Europe with ranges of more than 400km.

The Marvel R and MG5 are trying to change the reputation of Chinese cars in Europe after years of copycats, and are set to go on sale in mid-2021.

Announcing its latest plans for Europe on March 16, the Chinese group SAIC which owns the brand said both models will be available exclusively with electric drive, but hasn't yet reveal concrete prices.

However the brand has already made it clear with the ZS that it's aiming for a high price-to-performance ratio.

MG wants to position the 4.67-metre-long Marvel R as a snazzy SUV at the upper end of the compact class. It will feature a less traditional design on the outside, as well as digital instruments and a large touchscreen on the inside.

According to MG, you'll be able to get it as a rear-wheel drive car with two electric motors or as an all-wheel drive car with a third motor on the front axle.

The system power of up to 288hp enables a sprint from 0 to 100kph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 200kph. MG hasn't given details on the battery, but says range will be more than 400km.

The second newcomer is the all-electric MG5 estate. With a length of 4.54 metres, it's of the more compact variety by today's standards, offering between 578 and 1,476 litres of storage space. It's powered by an electric motor with 184 hp and MG says range here will also be beyond 400km.
