Road to Penang Bridge jammed on first day of CMCO

BUTTERWORTH: The road leading towards the island at the entrance of Penang Bridge was badly congested on the first day of the conditional movement control order (MCO).

A check by The Star on this morning found the 5km stretch from Seberang Jaya - Juru interchange packed with motorists driving into the island.

Although there was a police roadblock during the rush hour, personnel were only seen checking motorists for their authorisation letters at around 9.30am.

Factory worker Ahmad Arif Roslan, 35, said he had not expected the road to be that congested as schools were closed.

"Luckily, I wasn't late to work," he said.

Congestion on the highway only started to subside around 11.15am.

On Saturday, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced that conditional MCO would be imposed in all states in Peninsular Malaysia except for Kelantan, Perlis and Pahang from Nov 9 until Dec 6.

He said the decision was made after the Health Ministry found that there had been a significant increase in Covid-19 cases as well as the rate of infections in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Terengganu.
