Say hello to the new Skoda Karoq SUV - son of the Yeti

PRAGUE: The next generation of Skoda's mid-sized Yeti SUV comes with a completely new design and a new name. The kid brother of the larger Kodiaq is being labelled the "Karoq."

The Czech subsdiary of carmaker Volkswagen said the car will debut officially in Stockholm in May before it enters showrooms in the second half of 2017.

The new compact five-seater car looks more like the Kodiaq than the Yeti it replaces, but it also boasts a more rugged look and is clearly primed for some off-road action.

The car is practical too, with a boot which offers up to 1,630 litres with the seat folded down. This makes it a worthy rival to its main competitor, the Nissan Qashqai, which swallows 1,585 litres of luggage.

The Karoq is technically close to the VW Tiguan and inherits that car's touchscreen infotainment system, with top-of-the-range connectivity. It even has a WiFi hotspot.

The Karoq name continues Skoda's Alaskan theme, which started with the Kodiaq. Karoq is an amalgam of the words for car and arrow in the language of Alaska's indigenous people. Kodiaq is the name of an Alaskan bear.

A choice of five power trains will be available when the Karoq goes on sale - two petrol units and three diesels - offering between 115hp and 190hp.

All drivetrains can be matched up with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG automatic. The range-topping 2.0 TDI comes as standard with four-wheel drive and seven-speed DSG.
