Speed limiters will hurt sales of performance cars, says Alpina

MUNICH: Proposals to make speed limiters mandatory in cars and impose speed limits on Germany's autobahn network have triggered debates in the country.

In a report by whichcar, Alpina CEO Andreas Bovensiepen said he hopes both proposals will not see reality, as they will definitely affect sales of performance cars.

He explained that it would be insane to think that lowering speed limits alone will result in fewer accidents.

"If you go slower, the kinetic energy is lower, so in theory you’ll have more safety – this is a dangerous way to think,” he said in the whichcar report.

“If there are speed limiters I think the majority of cars will get a much lower quality in suspension. The German manufactures will say ‘oh, why should we invest so much money in suspension if there’s hardly any difference if you can go no faster than 120kph’. In that case you don’t need five-link suspension etc.,” he said

However, Bovensiepen also said with autonomous driving cars, it would be safer to have speed limiters installed.
