PETALING JAYA: The government has yet to give the green light for interstate travel ahead of the Hari Raya festive season as the number of Covid-19 cases and transmission risk are still high, says Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said a decision would only be made once the Health Ministry conducted its own risk assessment.
The public, he said, should not be lax as the number of infections remained high.
“We have over 1,000 cases daily. During our first lockdown, it was about 300-odd cases daily, ” he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Pharmaniaga Bhd and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu that was also witnessed by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.
Ismail Sabri warned that stern action would be taken against those “buying” travel permits or pre-stamped letters with a police seal.
Action would also be taken against police officers found to be selling those permits, he added.
“If you purchase (permits) outside with police approval, that is wrong. The police never issue anything like that.
“How can the police give blanket approval without going through a proper screening process? The authorities need to know why an individual wants to travel, ” he said.
