LONDON: Teenage would-be drivers in Britain can try their hand at piloting a posh Bentley limousine years before they are allowed to drive on the road legally.

The country's largest pre-17 driving school, called Young Driver, offers 10-17-year-olds the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the Flying Spur, which sports a V12, 6-litre engine turning out 560hp.

The dual-control Flying Spur has four-wheel-drive and it can dash to 100kph in just five seconds. However, instructors say rapid acceleration is definitely not on the programme for 10-year-olds.

The lessons take place under the watchful eye of a specialist instructor and parents often opt to sit in the sumptuous, leather-clad rear seats while their youngsters master the controls up front.

Before being allowed out with the Bentley, the teenagers have to cut their teeth on a humble Vauxhall Corsa, although only a minimum of only one hour's driving experience is needed.

"This makes an ideal treat and youngsters love having the opportunity to get behind the wheel of such a powerful and luxurious car," says Sue Waterfield from Young Driver. "It also encourages them to consider how different cars handle, and what a responsibility it is to be in control of them."

Youngsters undertake the same manoeuvres in the Bentley as they do in a standard lesson. Skills include practising parking, tackling junctions and negotiating roundabouts. The Flying Spur replaces the school's older Arnage model, driven by more than 2,000 young drivers. Lessons in the Flying Spur cost around £50 (RM256) for evey 30 mins.
