Tesla Roadster heading — into outer space

SAN FRANCISCO: You can always count on Tesla CEO Elon Musk to catch people off-balance. This time, he aims to blast a cherry-red Tesla Roadster into orbit near Mars.

It's always helpful if you have the means to achieve it. Bearing in mind he's the founder of SpaceX, it's entirely possible for him to put the car on its Falcon Heavy rocket and fired it into outer space.

The founder of the aerospace manufacturer and space transport service provider announced the plan on his Instagram account recently with the catchy title "A Red Car for the Red Planet".

He said the roadster would go up in space to the tune of David Bowie's Space Oddity. His Instagram account shows a number of photos where the car is being prepared for launch into an elliptical orbit around the sun.

As much as the plan would add more shine to the Tesla brand, it has a more mundane reason. SpaceX is doing more test flights of new rockets and such projectiles usually carry concrete or steel blocks to simulate payload. For Musk, it's a case of killing two birds with one stone by strapping a Tesla atop an experimental rocket for a one-way trip into outer space.
