BERLIN: Don't worry too much about damaging your car's paint job while cleaning. The area where you can do an unexpected amount of damage is at the wheel rims.

If you're using a high-pressure cleaner to hose the dirt off your wheels, it's best to do it at a distance of at least 2 metres, says leading technical inspector Tuv.

That's because if you get any closer, you can damage sensitive parts of the rubber on the tyres. You're better off keeping the amount of time that rubber parts are exposed to a high-pressure hose to a bare minimum.

The most careful approach is simply to use a brush and a bucket of a special cleaning solution.
