MEDINI CITY: The third of four installments of the Toyota Vios Challenge kicked off with the first of the two-day affair plagued by plenty of heat, rain and racing action in Medini City, Johor.

The seven-turn 1.9km street circuit runs in an anti-clockwise direction and features widths of up to three lanes for many sections of the track - providing drivers with more overtaking opportunities.

The first race of the day saw an eventful start as the green flag came down for the Sporting Class, but a squabble at the front for the first corner - a tight 90-degree left-hander, caused an accident that required a restart of the race.

The next race saw droplets of rain beginning to fall as the Promotional Class racers lined up on the grid and as the racing intensity increased, so did the precipitation with some of the drivers seen experiencing difficulties with the greasy conditions as some spun at the hairpin section.

But as quickly as the rain began, so too was the sun to emerge and the conditions proved a little more tricky for the drives to contend with, prompting the safety car to emerge for three laps, while Shawn Lee in Car 6 lead the pack.

As soon as the rain faded, the safety car pulled in and a heated battle ensued at the back of the pack with drivers trying to improve their positions. Meanwhile, Shawn managed to slowly build a considerable lead ahead for a lonely drive.

After 20 laps, Shawn finished the race with a 5.268-second gap to second place finisher Shukri Yahaya in Car 24 who was followed by Danny Koo in Car 23 for third a further 25.809 seconds later.

Although the Super Sporting Class got off to a clean start with everyone managing to get through the first turn, there was almost a pile-up right after along the long straight that forced Danny Koo in Car 23 to retire due to heavy damages.

With the race quickly heating up, the excitement was doused by a sudden occurrence of torrential rain, which called out the safety car for 11 laps with Ho Wil Liam in Car 39 leading the pack.

The rest of the race proved uneventful due to the wet conditions with lots of standing water along certain sections of the circuit that made over-taking impossible.

The final race of the first day ended with Ho taking first place, followed by second place finisher Wong Yew Choong of ST Wangan Racing Team in Car 21 just 0.735 seconds later, while Syafiq bin Ali of M7 Racing Team in Car 7 took third a further 1.461 seconds later.

The second day of racing will see the top six racers reverse their positions making Keifli Othman of Team Laser Motor Racing in Car 63 starting in pole position with popular favourite Tengku Djan Ley of Team Nanoplus in Car 12 beside him. Although the weather is expected to be hot and sunny on Saturday, a thunderstorm is expected somtime in the afternoon.
