PETALING JAYA: If you see a trash bin in front of your house, do not shift it because it may be bait to hijack your car.

The Kedah police posted this advice on their Facebook page on Sunday, warning people to be wary of this new tactic by criminals, reported China Press.

This tactic usually involved more than one person shifting the bin of the targeted house from its original position, the advice read.

“Some will place the bin in front of the house blocking the entrance.

“Those who arrive in a car and want to enter the house will most likely get down to remove the bin without locking their vehicle.

“That’s when a criminal hijacks the car, ” the posting said.

It added that some even brandish a knife or parang threatening the victim to surrender their valuables before driving off with the car.

Calling on members of the public to always lock their cars after alighting, it also reminded all to pay attention to unfamiliar vehicles parked near the neighbourhood, and possibly snap a picture or take down their details.
