PETALING JAYA: Uber is testing out cash payments for rides in Kuala Lumpur, the ride-sharing company said.

It said that thought credit cards are a common way to pay, many Malaysians still prefer to use cash.

"By testing out cash payments in KL, we’re hoping to provide all Malaysians, no matter which city you call home, more choice and a payment option that suits your needs," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Malaysian riders and driver-partners love the flexibility of cash and credit options combined," said Uber Asia Pacific director of communications Amy Kunrojpanya.

She said Uber is introducing cash to remove the "fear factor" for first-time riders.

"Not everyone is comfortable using their credit for online or mobile transactions – we listened to these concerns and introduced an alternative so that every Malaysian can have the freedom to choose the way they travel, and cash is a truly inclusive way to let everyone move around their city easily," said Kunrojpanya.

She added that cash payments can increase the adoption rate of new riders outside core service areas by an average 45%.

There are five steps to paying by cash.

"Go to the ‘Payment’ section in the app. Select ‘cash’ as your payment option. Confirm your pickup location and request your ride.

"At the end of the trip, pay the fare directly to the driver. Pay exact change, or round up the fare to the nearest ringgit," said Kunrojpanya.
