Volkswagen unveils new ID.7 saloon, expanding its electric range

BERLIN: Volkswagen's core brand is expanding its electric range upwards with the new ID.7 saloon, expanding VW's electric mobility ambitions but without responding to criticism that battery drive remains unaffordable to most buyers.

The car, which is just under five metres long, is expected to achieve ranges of up to 700km in its higher trim level and will be offered with modern connectivity and display technology. Price's in VW's home market are expected to be under €60,000 (RM290,000).

The ID.7 sees the company expand into the upper mid-range after the Wolfsburg-based company started its series of pure electric cars with models like the compact car ID.3 and the small SUV ID.4.

Unveiled in Berlin and other cities on Monday, the ID.7 will be on display at the Shanghai motor show in the second half of April.

VW is thereby making it clear that its target group is, on the one hand, buyers in Europe and America, but also customers in its most important market, China, where the manufacturer already offers the large ID.6 SUV.

The follow-up model, the ID.7, will be available in China and in European countries in the second half of 2023, and in North America from 2024 onwards.

One of the most important model launches for Volkswagen last year was the ID.Buzz electric bus. In addition, the series version of the ID.2 small car, which was recently unveiled in concept form, should be ready by 2026 at the latest, and a mini model for less than €20,000 is also being developed.

Climate activists have long been calling for car companies to offer smaller and more affordable electric cars, the majority of which are large and comparitively expensive, and VW had been criticised for its mostly pricey electric range.

The company says the share of fully electric cars at Volkswagen Passenger Cars is to reach at least 80% of vehicles delivered in Europe by the end of this decade, and 10 new electric models are planned by 2026.

According to the VW group, one of the roles of the ID.7 will be to "electrify the long haul". It will have the largest battery of all models in the main division.

The European and North American versions of the ID.7 will be built at VW's Emden plant from the second half of the year. The China variant will be built in China itself.
