VW emergency call problems also discovered in Audi, SEAT models

WOLFSBURG: A problem with an emergency call feature that had already prompted a delivery halt of some Volkswagen models has also been discovered in cars manufactured by company subsidiaries Audi and Seat, according to company sources.

The affected models are the Audi A3 and the SEAT Leon. Reports emerged on Friday of similar problems with VW's Golf 8.

The problem centres on the emergency call assistance function known as eCall, which automatically makes a free call if the car is involved in a serious road accident. Company research has shown that, in some cars, the function might not work because data is transferred improperly.

Volkswagen is preparing itself for a recall of the Golf 8. The decision for a recall and on how to provide a software patch is expected from the Federal Motor Vehicle Transport Authority (KBA) in the coming days.

Production on the Golf compact car series - a mainstay of the German carmaker - will continue for the time being, but all new vehicles will be kept off the market until the issue is fully resolved.
