WOLFSBURG: Volkswagen has unveiled the facelifted Golf R, the fastest version of its stock hatchback, giving it a power hike along with the low-key rejig applied to all the other 2017 Golfs.

A closer look reveals a new front bumper and headlamp arrangement on the updated Golf R which has all-wheel-drive as standard.

Full-LED front lights no longer cost extra, and the rear lights have been redrawn.

Under the bonnet, engineers have squeezed an extra 10 horsepower out of the turbocharged petrol motor which now has 310 horses on tap. The 2-litre mill is one of the world's most powerful four-cylinder engines.

Output is on a par with the track-ready Clubsport S limited edition of the Golf and is good enough for a claimed 0-100kph sprint of 4.6 seconds.

The biggest change inside the R is a classy new infotainment set-up called Active Info Display which comes with a 12.3-inch monitor.
