Want to be a commercial driver? Govt to subsidise training costs

PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has begun registrations for the MyLesen Goods Driving Licence 2.0 (GDL 2.0) programme, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said GDL 2.0 is aimed at helping logistics and transport companies address driver shortages while also providing job opportunities for up to 700 Malaysians.

"The initiative will help 700 Malaysians qualify as professional movers at a time when many are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic impact," the MCA president said in a Facebook post today.

Under the GDL 2.0 initiative, the government will subsidise candidates in taking their E Full and Articulated GDL licences to enable them to take advantage of vacancies in the logistics industry. Candidates will also receive a one-off allowance of RM500.

Dr Wee said registrations for the initiative are subject to terms and conditions and lessons will be conducted at qualified driving schools.

Registration for this initiative under the Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan and the National Transport Policy (DPN) 2019-2030 is now open until Dec 31, 2021 for Malaysians aged 21 and above who possess Class D or E Competent Driving License (CDL). Candidates must not be blacklisted by the courts, JPJ or the police.

The implementation of MyLESEN GDL 2.0 is an initiative under the aspirations of the Malaysian Family (Keluarga Malaysia) and to bolster the logistics industry and support its workforce.

Interested candidates can register here for companies, or here for individuals.
